What are your feelings on ethical consumption of honey? I was watching a video by EmmyMadeinJapan about her beekeeping and honey harvesting and several people in the comments said she was stealing the bee’s food. She explained that the bee’s make too much honey for themselves? How does that work? I know vegans say honey is bad but I’m getting the sense that it’s not if harvested ethically? I buy local honey from a nearby farm for my horrible allergies but is it actually bad to eat honey?
It is in no way bad to eat honey. Or take honey in general. The bees are hard-wired to collect as much honey as possible all the time they can during the spring, summer, and fall. Sometimes when there is too much nectar available, the bees will fill up their hives so much with honey that the queen can’t lay eggs any more and the colony will slowly die out because they can’t make more bees. This is an extreme case, but it has happened to several of my colonies and is never fun.
