Do you like tomatoes? Well don’t go “thank the honeybees” on this one. While tomatoes are pollinated by strong wind sometimes, it is actually mainly bumblebees that pollinate them! Especially in greenhouses. Other bees that can chew through the flowers can pollinate them, like sweat bees, but it is typically bumblebees because their big strong wings can vibrate the pollen free of the flowers when other bees’ wings are just too weak.
This applies to many yummy plant foods all across the world too! Not just with bumblebees but with other wasps and solitary bees! So next time you are thinking about “save the bees” remember that it’s not just about the honey kind of bee, but ALL the lovely little buzzy bees out there!~
